About Me

I’m Barbara Rooney, a qualified, independent, civil celebrant based in Bedford, Bedfordshire.

Having previously taught English and Drama for 19 years, I have a passion for reading and words. I will use my wide experience of language and my empathy to help you to choose the right words, in the right order, that are right for you for your ceremony.

Throughout my career in teaching, and in public health, I have come to realise that communicating effectively is not easy for everyone, and that sometimes the pressure to plan, and to have a ‘perfect ceremony’ can feel overwhelming.

It was reflecting on this that led me to train as a celebrant, believing that I can understand the diverse needs of individuals and families by bringing my experience, confidence and ability to put people at ease – promising to create a ceremony that is just right for them.

As a wife, and mum of two, adult children, I also have lots of experience of celebrating personal milestones, and appreciating their importance in our lives. I understand when formality is important, and also when humour may be appropriate, and can help to calm nerves, and provide reassurance.

I am warm, friendly, approachable, and flexible, and I will listen carefully to what you want, so that your celebration ceremony is bespoke.

I will use my passion for the written and spoken word to help you to create a ceremony that is uniquely yours and will be a precious memory for life.

I will advise, guide, and support you through every stage of the process – from initial ideas and planning, through to leading and delivering your ceremony on the day.

I will make sure that you feel that you are in safe and professional hands, so that you can enjoy every moment of your special celebration.

Qualifications

I am qualified to the highest standard for celebrancy in the UK, with a Level 3 Diploma in Celebrancy for Naming and Couples Ceremonies, awarded by the National Open College Network (NOCN).

I am also a fully insured member of the Association of Independent Celebrants (AOIC). The AOIC is the only registered, trade association for independent celebrants in the UK – providing members with the support, resources, and ongoing training and updates that they need to create truly special ceremonies their clients.

I am also proud to have been trained, and been certified with distinction in Funeral Celebrancy, by the Academy of Professional Celebrants.
